A literary bi-weekly periodical with a nationalist orientation, including essays in a variety of genres including news, literary works, articles and popular science, and correspondence. 

Remarks: 

העורך מציין שהגיליון הוא הראשון לרבע השלישי של השנה השניה. לא ברור האם אכן החל לצאת שנה קודם לכן, או שהכוונה לכך שהשנה הראשונה היא שנת תרל"ט 1878, שבה הוציא העורך בסיגט לפחות 10 גיליונות מעיתון בשם זה, הראשון בהם מיום 9.10.1878.

במודעה בראש הגיליון מ-1889 העורך מציין שהוא מוציא שבועון  נוסף, 'החרסה', וכנראה הוציא את שני השבועונים לסירוגין; לפי מנדל פרובסט העורך החל להוציא את 'החרסה' ב-1888.

Description: 

A literary-scholarly periodical that came out for five years as an annual publication, and was intended to appear from the sixth volume sue onwards as a monthly, but was only published once in this format. It served as a platform for essays by scores of contemporary authors, from Galicia and Europe in general, including scholars, philosophers, and writers, and also published authors’ correspondence posthumously. One of the central literary platforms of the era.

A Polish language weekly of the “Agudat Ahim” (=Association of Brethren), which advocated citizenship for Jews and social and cultural integration into the surrounding Polish society. Since some of the members of this circle came from the maskilic camp, and could not entirely break away from Hebrew language and culture, during its first years the periodical published a Hebrew language supplement titled “Ha-mazkir ahava le-eretz moladeto” (=Evoking love of one’s native land). The supplement published pieces praising Hebrew language and literature and advocated their dissemination among the Jewish people. Members of the association tried to impact the masses also by means of a German language journal in Hebrew print (/script?), named “Neues Judisches Folksblatt”,  which began to appear in July 1882 in Lviv, and whose editor was Isaac Aaron Bernfeld, the editor of the Hebrew supplement; its aim was “to sow a seed of love and brotherhood between our brethren the Children of Israel in Galicia and the people in whose midst they dwell.”

A political-literary periodical, whose editorial outlook favored cultural integration with the Polish people, with the aim of “arousing love in the hearts of our Jewish brethren to the Polish rulers of the land and our benefactors, to teach our youth to speak the language of the people of the land, i.e. Polish. So that we do not appear to them as mutes who cannot open their mouths to speak” (1881, Vol. 12, 6). 13-16 issues appeared.

Description: 

An Orthodox periodical published in Lemberg upon the founding of the Orthodox party “Mahzikei Ha-Dat” (=Keepers of the Religion) by Rabbi Shimon Sofer. It appeared for 35 years, first as a bi-weekly and later as a weekly, and was devoted to covering Jewish orthodox life in Lemberg and in Galicia generally. From time to time feuilletons were published in the lower part of the page, namely long essays with titles such as “Meshiv ka-Halacha” (Responding according to Jewish Law), or “She’elat hakham me-re’ehu al dvar havura kedosha mahzikei ha-dat u-teshuvato ha-rama” (=Questions and answers among scholars about the holy association ‘mahzikei hadat’).  During the first years, the periodical focused on events in Lemberg, especially matters concerning religion and its observance. Over time, the editorial scope broadened to include news and world affairs, and articles about the Jewish European Press. During 1895-1897, the periodical published historical stories that were translated from Der Israelit. Many of the contributors, particularly in its first years, used initials only as signatures, and therefore can be difficult to identify. Over the years, this practice changed and more authors began to use their full names.

בשנים תרל"ט 1879 - תרמ"ה 1884 הופיע כדו-שבועון.

מתרמ"ה 1884 בעיקר יצא מידי שבוע, לסרוגין, בשמות 'מחזיקי הדת' ו'קול מחזיקי הדת', כביכול כשני דו-שבועונים נפרדים, כנראה מחמת הקשיים להשיג רישיון להוצאת שבועון, ובעשור האחרון להופעתו – בחלק מהתקופה כל אחד משני הכותרים הופיע כשבועון.
