מחזיקי הדת/ קול מחזיקי הדת
An Orthodox periodical published in Lemberg upon the founding of the Orthodox party “Mahzikei Ha-Dat” (=Keepers of the Religion) by Rabbi Shimon Sofer. It appeared for 35 years, first as a bi-weekly and later as a weekly, and was devoted to covering Jewish orthodox life in Lemberg and in Galicia generally. From time to time feuilletons were published in the lower part of the page, namely long essays with titles such as “Meshiv ka-Halacha” (Responding according to Jewish Law), or “She’elat hakham me-re’ehu al dvar havura kedosha mahzikei ha-dat u-teshuvato ha-rama” (=Questions and answers among scholars about the holy association ‘mahzikei hadat’). During the first years, the periodical focused on events in Lemberg, especially matters concerning religion and its observance. Over time, the editorial scope broadened to include news and world affairs, and articles about the Jewish European Press. During 1895-1897, the periodical published historical stories that were translated from Der Israelit. Many of the contributors, particularly in its first years, used initials only as signatures, and therefore can be difficult to identify. Over the years, this practice changed and more authors began to use their full names.
בשנים תרל"ט 1879 - תרמ"ה 1884 הופיע כדו-שבועון.
מתרמ"ה 1884 בעיקר יצא מידי שבוע, לסרוגין, בשמות 'מחזיקי הדת' ו'קול מחזיקי הדת', כביכול כשני דו-שבועונים נפרדים, כנראה מחמת הקשיים להשיג רישיון להוצאת שבועון, ובעשור האחרון להופעתו – בחלק מהתקופה כל אחד משני הכותרים הופיע כשבועון.
