Leon Sternbach was a Polish-Jewish classical philologist and Byzantinist, a professor at the Jagellonian University. Born in Drohobych, Galicia, Sternbach received his Doctor's degree in Vienna and, after teaching at Lemberg University was offered a position in Jagellonian University. In 1892 he was promoted to professor. In 1904-1905 he served as the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, and in 1918 received honoris causa. Sternbach was a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1894. Sternbach’s fields of research were gnomonology, patrology, paremiology and the Greek language.
In 1939 Leon Sternbach was arrested by Nazi troops during the Sonderaktion Krakau and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Sternbach was killed in the camp in 1940.
