Kimpulung is located on the banks of the Moldova river, in the historical region of Bukovina. The first documention of Jews in Kimpulung is from 1684 although Jews probably setteled in Kimpulung in the 15th century. In 1769 their were 45 registered Jewish families in Kimpulung. In 1775 the Jewish cemetery was established. Over the course of 75 years the local authorites in Kimpulung imposed measures upon the Jewish community in an atimpt to assimilate the Jews into the broader society.
After 1848 Bukovina became an independent region and the situation of the Jews improved. Dew to this improvment, in the following decades the Jewish population in Kimpulung increased. In 1871 there were 665 registered Jews in Kimpulung. In 1890 - 1,163 Jews, which were 18.2% of the population. In 1913 - 3,500 Jews and in 1930 - 1,488.
Today there is a small Jewish community in Kimpulung.
