Markus Landau was a famous writer and literary historian. Born in Brody in 1837, Landau’s first career was in trade. As a merchant, Landau traveled often to Italy, France and Germany, before settling in Vienna in 1869. There, he began studying philosophy, and in 1878 became interested in literature as well. As a result, Landau authored a famous study dedicated to the sources of the Decameron. Italian literature was among Landau’s predominant interests, which also included the history of Austria. In addition, Landau occupied himself with contributing articles to Allgemeine Zeitung, Presse, Frankfurter Zeitung and Zeitschrift für Vergleichende Literaturgeschichte. He wrote Die Quellen des Dekameron (Vienna, 1869, 2d ed. 1884); Beiträge zur Geschichte der Italienischen Novelle (Vienna, 1875); Giovanni Bocaccio, Sein Leben und Seine Werke, etc. Markus Landau died in Vienna in 1918.
